Recommendations for travelling with checked in baggage

Most of us travel with registered/checked in baggage. To make sure that everything goes as planned, please familiarise yourself with the baggage requirements of your airline before you start packing for your trip. Plan what and where you’ll pack your items: some items will need to travel in your checked-in baggage and those that you might want to use during the flight should go in your hand baggage.

When travelling with luggage, please remember to:

  • Make sure that your hand luggage does not contain any prohibited goods! You can get detailed information about restrictions and prohibitions on goods in your hand luggage on the Tax and Customs Board website.
  • Comply with the weight limits set by your airline as they will charge you for any excess weight. If exceeding the limits is unavoidable, we would recommend investigating other options such as mailing the items before deciding to fly with them.
  • If you travel with special or oversize baggage, for example golf equipment, bicycles, ski equipment, surfboards, baby carriages etc., ask your airline about their specific requirements and any additional fees.
  • Valuables and fragile items, including cash and documents, should be kept in your hand luggage. Most airlines will not be liable for loss or damage to these items.
  • Make sure your bags have tags with your name and contact details clearly marked and that your baggage can be easily identified by distinctive markings. This will make finding your bag a lot easier should you lose it.
